An Open Letter to the RNC and Fred Thompson

Do you want to win back the country? Does the GOP want more bang for its bucks? The way is simple. Do NOT field a Presidential Candidate. That’s right Do NOT. Go back to basic grass roots and worry about State campaigns. In a New York Times/CBS News Poll taken about two weeks ago (as of 07/24/07), half of Americans said a president who is neither a Republican nor a Democrat could govern effectively.
People do not trust party politics. Who can blame them? The Party picks the Candidate and the delegates pick a platform then the hacking and hewing to try to fit the candidate to the mold the Party has created. It doesn’t work in these modern times. Each candidate brings baggage with them, reams of speeches, political affiliations that do not meet the criteria of everyone. Face it both political parties are fragmented by special interest groups. The socialists of the Democratic Party are losing ground to the Latin American Coalition and the Alternative Living crowd. Perhaps George Soros should start learning Spanish and start dating Caesar Chavez.
Now that you are thinking this idea is nuts let’s finish the idea. Fred Thompson is a principled man. I for one would hate to see the GOP try to shape him. Thompson should announce and run for President as an Independent…and the GOP should support him and his running mate, another highly principled man, Joseph Lieberman. Two fighters both highly principled, unfettered by party loyalty, and working together for this great Nation.
Now some of you are saying this is dumb, why should the GOP support Thompson?
Why don’t they just field him as their candidate? Several reasons the biggest being money. The GOP is not doing too great at raising funds this go round. Tom Delay has been sent back to Texas and neutered by Party politics. They can throw their support towards Thompson and he can take it or leave it, but the money is best spent at grass roots. If Thompson ran as an Independent the election would be for the hearts and minds of the American People. It would be for a President who was non-aligned. Who then would the Democrats attack and blame? Sure the President but not because of his Party Affiliation! The hate and venom from the democrats in letters to the editors and comments on blog is directed at Bush and the GOP. They are being portrayed as one and the same.
There is a danger to this proposal. The danger is that the American People might actually see the need for a third or fourth party. The danger is they might actually start thinking for themselves instead of being automatons of partisan politics. The danger is that people of America might actually reap some benefits from an election for a man and his ideas rather for a man and his political party.
If Thompson ran as independent and the GOP did field another candidate the country would lose because we have seen in the past that people will not vote for a 3d party candidate that doesn’t have a chance of winning. Ergo the GOP should not field a candidate, better spend their campaign money on the local elections and use their political machine to support the Independent Non-aligned Candidate of the future, Fred Thompson.
The GOP would win. Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman would win. The voters would win. And most of all…This great Nation would win.
