Shame on Columbia University

Columbia U On Monday, September 24, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is scheduled to speak after an invitation was extended by Columbia University.  This is the same university that allowed its students to verbally assault Jim Gillcrest of the Minuteman Project.  Will Ahmadinejad be treated equally?  We all know the answer–of course not.

The President of Columbia, Dr. Lee Bollinger rationalizes his decision this way:

Columbia, as a community dedicated to learning and scholarship, is committed to confronting ideas?to understand the world as it is and as it might be. To fulfill this mission we must respect and defend the rights of our schools, our deans and our faculty to create programming for academic purposes.

Academic purpose?  Scholarship?  They provide first amendment rights to an individual who would deny those same rights in his own country, who would deny women’s rights, gay rights, and religious rights?  Columbia University looks the other way in this case.

It is OK that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad referred to the Holocaust as a “myth,” called for genocide of Israel, and a world without Zionism.  Yes, Mahmoud is welcome at Columbia University.  There is no outrage–only defense of free speech to a person who practices hate speech.  However, let them put a conservative at the podium and he / she is shouted out of the room before they can speak.

Shame on Columbia University.  You hide behind free speech and scholarship but never stand up for basic human rights and principles.
