FHK SitRep 10.03.07: Why it’s Important to Use Your Own Bandwidth!

Snapped Shot has an example today of why it’s important to use your own bandwidth when posting photos you find on the web. A jihadi website stole his bandwidth to use one of his photos (and misreperesent the corresponding article!), so he played a little joke on them. He changed the photo. Go here to see the rest.

Basically, to steal bandwith, you simply cut and past (code and all) a photo from someone’s website or blog to your own. That way, the photo stays on their website, and doesn’t take up space on yours. This is not cool, unless you have express permission from the host to do that.

Ron Goodwyne, FHK’s IT guy, e-mailed some instructions to the authors a few weeks ago on the best way to include photos on your blog. You should do one of the following:

• Make sure the photo has been uploaded to your blog
• Make sure you have permission from whoever is hosting the photo to embed it in a post your blog
• Use a free photo hosting site like Photobucket to host the photo

Ron: I prefer the last option. I use Photobucket because it works well, is free and gives you the links to copy and paste so it is really easy to use it to embed photos. While we are nowhere near having a problem with bandwidth or storage at FHK, just planning for the day we do it would be a good idea to outsource photo hosting from the start. That will save both storage and bandwidth.
