For users of Google’s popular mail program Gmail, there is great news in the form of IMAP support. With IMAP enabled you will have the ability to access your Gmail account using nearly any modern mail client. The most important feature of Gmail is tagging (labels in GMail) and that has been back fitted to the system. For instance if you create a new folder it will show up as a label “INBOX/FOLDERNAME”. Not a perfect solution but it works. Once an email is moved to such an IMAP folder you can add or edit labels for the messages using Gmail in your browser.
Setup
Google provides information on the setup of imap to various clients. Note that I observed that the tab Forwarding and POP/IMAP did indicated only Forwarding and POP. Enabling POP appeared to work fine.
