When Will Digg Dig Out Of The Doldrums

From their high a year ago, Digg has steadily fallen and lost market share to other news sharing sites such as Reddit, Propeller, and others. A year ago they had a 1.2 percent daily reach according to Alexa.com. Today, their reach is half that amount (0.6) and falling.

Digg has made some cosmetic changes to their website but the trend downward continues. The question is why? Are people sick of Digg? Is Digg doing something wrong? I think it is the later — they are doing something wrong. Given the number of complaints about Digg on the internet, the majority have much to do with one feature on Digg — the bury button. This button is the nuclear option of censorship. It is inherently unfair but Digg refuses to accept this premise despite many complaints.

A small group of people have learned how to manipulate the bury button and censor content. They are known among the Digg users as the “bury brigade.” Many have complained to Digg’s customer service and abuse people with no return response. Eventually, those people just left Digg in frustration and anger.

It is too bad. Digg has much to offer but the repeated censorship capabilities built into their system only serve to frustrate and anger their once loyal users. I’m not sure how low the numbers need to sink before they remove that feature. But even if they do, I believe it will be too late.

It seems to me that Digg’s agenda has little to do with reach. Of course they’d like as much reach as possible but their larger goal is consistent with the bury button and the way it is currently used. Digg is in the Daily KOS camp. I predict it will never go away so long as Digg is under its present management. It will require a buy out for anything to change.

I think you are right. Digg is predominantly liberal and conservatives have left it behind a long time ago.
