FHK SitRep 12/5/07: Digg is Digging Facebook…?

Did you know Digg has a Facebook Profile? Normally only human beings with first and last names are allowed to have Facebook profiles – I’m not sure why Digg has been allowed an exception.
Every time I go on Digg, it seems they have copied a new Facebook feature. They’ve implemented a “shout” feature, which was very similar to Facebook’s “poke” feature, and started notifying users by e-mail when they had new friends – also like Facebook. The profiles have many of the same featues as Facebook’s. They’re jumping into the social-election-fray by adding a “Digg the Candidates” feature, which is very similar to Facebook’s “Politicians You Support” feature.
And now, they have a nifty little image crawler that is identical to Facebook, which scours your submissions for photos, and lets you choose which one (if any) you’d like included with your Digg Posts.
Why is Digg trying to be more like Facebook? Fortunately, I haven’t seen signs of Facebook trying to become more like Digg. For example, I have yet to find a “bury” button on Facebook, or a gang of trolls trying to censor the content of the site to suit their own political views. Let’s hope it stays that way.
