Naval Superiority: China did more than just inconvenience U.S. sailors on a port visit two months ago. It forced a naval confrontation that could have gotten ugly. As the People’s Republic puts to sea, it may yet.
Last year, the Kitty Hawk carrier battle group hoped to pass the Thanksgiving holiday in Hong Kong as it did in prior years. Families of the crew had journeyed to Hong Kong to spend the holiday with their sons and daughters only to be disappointed when the ship was turned away for unexplained reasons.
That incident came on the heels of another where China refused safe harbor for two U.S. Navy minesweepers seeking refuge from a storm. The Chinese move was a blatant violation of international naval tradition. The two ships had to be refueled at sea so they could return to their home port of Sasebo, Japan.
In earlier comments on the issue, we noted that the commander of the Kitty Hawk squadron made a point of returning to Japan via the Taiwan Strait.
According to the Navy Times, which cited a Chinese-language newspaper in Taiwan, there’s much more to this story, as the Chinese made a point of their own….(more)
