UPDATED 05/09/08: In order to continue to promote the blogs we like, we have (as promised) revived and re-formatted our FHK Blog Honor Roll. Now in the sidebar, you’ll see links to articles we’ve found on the web that we think you might like to read. Those articles will be archived in monthly blog posts, like these. This way, we’ll help promote other conservative bloggers by driving traffic to their sites, AND by giving them links which will count toward their Technorati count (also see here)…without the need for our previous two-foot long list of mostly unreciprocated links in our sidebar. Questions, comments and suggestions are all welcome.
Not long ago, I published an article, Why Blogrolling is Useless, explaining why blogrolls that use javascript are no longer “counted” on ranked search engines like Technorati. The whole purpose of the blogroll, of course, is to exchange and accumulate links.
Although we did find that the blogrolling sofware used by Wordpress does “count” on Technorati, we did some further research and found that even that is useless, for the most part, because most of the bloggers on our blogroll either weren’t reciprocating the links, or were using software like Blogrolling that uses javascript - and so those reciprocated links weren’t working.
As I said to a few members of WWF this morning, the more I look at this blogroll mess, the more I’m thinking we need to stop wasting our time on blogrolls. It was a good idea at one time, and probably helped a lot of successful bloggers get where they are, but once the search engines caught on to the game, they devised ways to stop a blogger from working their way up the ranks by simply collecting meaningless links.
Frankly, I don’t blame them. The blogrolls don’t reflect the quality of a blog at all. Unfortunately, in the process of weeding out undesirable links, they also elimintated links on static pages within the blogs, and links on sub-directories in the blog (Yes, I’ve tested these methods of archiving a blogroll and/or link list), as well as links contained within javascript. For a more complete explanation see Technorati’s FAQ page.
So, what do we do? It’s important to network with other bloggers online, and link to other blogs. We’ve looked to see how some of the successful bloggers do this. Michelle Malkin, HotAir, and Patrick Ruffini all have great trackback sections, which let bloggers include links content relevant to posts on their blog. Eric Odom on Conservablogs has neat comment feature that locates and links to the commenter’s last blog post. Charles Johnson on Little Green Footballs has recently added a very cool “spinoff links” feature, which takes this idea to a an unprecented level. Unfortunately, although the links using these methods do drive traffic to the linked blogs, which is great, they don’t “count” as links on Technorati, because of the way they’re embedded. Only direct hyperlinks work.
In the past, FHK had a feature similar to a lot of other bloggers’ daily link list we called the “FHK Blog Honor Roll.” We used it to promote good stories we’d read, as well as to link to other bloggers. We’ll be re-creating that feature over the next few days, in lieu of maintaining a blogroll. These links are good - especially if the bloggers eventually reciprocate. We’re planning to revive and re-format this feature a bit in the next few days….more on that, later.
Finally, so that we don’t break the links for For those faithful friends who have us on their blogrolls, we have pasted below our last blogroll (these links have been verified to have been reciprocated - thank you, bloggers!). These links should count on Technorati (according to it’s current FAQ page) for approximately six months from the original date of this post (February 27, 2008).
