Where’s Shirley Chisholm when you need her?

The election year 2008 will go down in history as the year a woman, Hillary Clinton and a black man, Barack Obama, both ran for the socialist(D) nomination for president. At this point, which one will stand victorious is yet to be seen. Either way, it’s going to continue to make history, because one of them will win and one of them will run in the general election. Unless they’re party chooses an outside third choice, that’s the way 2008 will play out.
It’s not the first time a woman has campaigned and/or been nominated for the highest office in the land and it’s not the first time a black man has either. I find it interesting that women started competing for the job much sooner than black men, but who knows or cares how that came to be.
There was the white woman, Victoria Chaflin Woodhull who ran with the Equal Rights Party in 1872, there was the white woman, Senator Margaret Chase Smith in 1964 who ran in the primary’s only to be pushed aside by Barry Goldwater. I only mention Sen. Smith because she was the first Republican woman to run. Then there was Charlene Mitchell in 1968 who ran with the Communist Party, any guesses as to how that worked out?
Finally, there’s Rep. Shirley Chisholm (D-NY), who, out of all the other hopefuls, stands out because of the fact she was a woman and black. A double threat. If she had also been blind and Jewish, chances are, she would probably have her own statue in our nations capitol next to Lincoln.
When the 2008 election year is finished and John McCain is sworn in (yes, I am calling it now) one can only speculate what’s in store for the socialist(D) party in 2012. Can they ever go back to a white male candidate? Will they? Dare they!? Will there be a law enacted that requires a woman candidate, a black male candidate, a black female candidate, a muslim in a wheelchair candidate, a mexican illegal immigrant candidate!? I think you can see where I’m going with this.
There’s a storm on the horizon for the socialist(D) party. Now that the minority candidate threshold has been crossed, mark my words, they can never go back. Unfortunately for the socialist(D) party, they were carried through that doorway by two tainted and fatally flawed candidates who have completely ruined they’re chances of ever running a campaign not mucked up in race and gender issues again. The threshold was crossed all wrong, with the wrong candidates and maybe too soon.
The socialist(D) party needs another Shirley Chisholm. A black woman who had the gender and race qualifications they are stuck to abiding by now, but with none of the criminality of those two they must hold their noses and choose from today.
Where are you Shirley Chisholm?
