Ron,
I must say, my thinking has been almost identical to yours, especially about having Obama being elected. The election of Obama might allow Conservatives to start over again, and trying to establish a more active platform and candidates who support that platform. I don't know what's happened to the Republican party since Ronald Reagan. He had the uncanny ability to communicate the conservative principals in a way where most of the public understood and supported him. Now, I don't see any Republican leaders who can communicate let alone believe in the conservative principals.

Although I just couldn't get my self to vote for Obama, it may not be the worst thing to happen to conservatives in the long run.

So Bush's Medicare scam was an example of "charity is for the weak and should never be the job of the government." And No Child Left Behind was an example of "Our party believes in states rights."

The example of the Republican Congress prior to '06 says you are mistaken. The fact that the GOP leadership blamed the '06 loses on Iraq says you are mistaken. The GOP as a party is in total denial and there are many in the upper echelon of the party who are working diligently to rid the party of conservatism altogether.

I do not claim that there are no conservatives in the Republican Party. Clearly there are. But they are a small minority today and they, and we, are losing ground. That will only be exacerbated by a McCain administration.

If you think McCain has taken his position on climate change "just to get elected" you don't understand McCain. Like amnesty for illegal aliens, McCain will ride the issue to his death bed. Again, Bush is not, and never was, a conservative. McCain is even less so. If you are willing to cede conservatism to maintain the GOP you will get more of what we've been getting. One definition of insanity is continuing to do what you've been doing while expecting a different result.

"It took Jimmy Carter to pave the way for Ronald Reagan. Without Carter’s dismal administration it is doubtful that conservatism would have taken hold as it did."

It took Gerald Ford to pave the way for Jimmy Carter. Without Nixon's (and then Ford's) dismal administrations, it is doubtful that the Democrat party would have taken hold as it did.

You're right in that Reagan was the last real Conservative. He knew the value in expanding federal spending a hundredfold -- it won us the Cold War. I have to disagree that Republicans are now "moderate liberals." Our party believes in states rights when appropriate -- like the Katrina cleanup, and preempting the 10th Amendment when appropriate, like keeping Marijuana and assisted suicide and abortion illegal (well, at least we got the Partial Birth Abortion Ban passed). We believe in effective tools against terrorism while the press wrings its hands about the propriety of dealing with terrorists harshly. We believe charity is for the weak and should never be the job of the government.

I don't see that Republicans are liberal at all, and I think you'll have a hard time making a case for it just because McCain said something about the environment to get elected. He'll continue in the proud tradition of a successful (albeit unpopular) two-term President before him.

Yes, there's always a reason to support someone who doesn't deserve support. So we engage in first stage thinking and ignore the long term consequences. Heck, maybe we'll be dead before it gets too bad. We can let our kids deal with it.

I understand you, Ron, and I don't disagree with you on most of this about the GOP having abandoned us as conservatives.

It's just the thought of having a Muslim (er...former Muslim now apostate) President during a time when we are at war with Islamic terrorism, a guy who things it's fine to murder babies so we don't "punish" their mothers for making "mistakes," and a guy who thinks it would be a good idea for the President of the United States to have a sit-down chat with the likes of Castro, Chavez, and I'm-a-nut-job...

God help us.
