Add Petrol

While stationed in the Far East I often laughed at the stilted choreography of some Asian television shows. It was stiff and robot-like, it lacked spirit. Now the Chinese Government is preparing to put on it’s best of many faces by training student attendees to the Olympics in how to cheer. As one of students who gave his name as Xiao Shang, said: “I am always amazed at the government’s ability to take the fun out of anything. Incredible.”

The BBC graphic above shows the “approved” Chinese method of Olympic cheering although the BBC’s translation of the accompanying verbiage is incorrect. The “approved words” that accompany the gestures are “Aoyun! Jia You! Zhongguo! Jia You!” - meaning “Olympics! Add petrol! China! Add petrol!”  A video of the cheering lessons is on-line at Breitbarttv.com.

For those not familiar with the language gaffs of translation let me tell you what they are trying to say. It is supposed to be “Give it some gasoline”, as in pedal to metal but as you can see it doesn’t translate well… or does it?

Is this perhaps a deliberate slap in the face by the Chinese Government who just happens to be our main competitor for oil? Is there a hidden meaning to it? Are they trying to “add fuel to the fire”?
