Goal-Free Living…?! (Book and Podcast Interview)

I caught an interview today of Steve Shapiro by Lorraine Cohen, and learned so much that I wanted to share it with our FHK readers. In this interview, Shapiro and Cohen discuss the difference between passion and frenetic energy, and about the importance of the journey over the destination. He emphasizes that we are to be “Goal-Free, not Goal-less,” and explains the difference in the following interview.
I’ve always been goal-oriented to an extreme that would probably be considered a disorder, so the idea of living in the moment is so new to me that I’m not even ready to attempt to really discuss it intelligently. However, in these turbulent political times, I think politically-conservative Americans mayb be able to relate to a lot of what is said in this interview. Our nation is at a crossroads right now and no one is really in a position to predict where we will be four or eight years from now. Innovation and creativity are going to be needed to help us through these trying times, personally, and as a country.
We are taught from a young age that in order to achieve great success we must set and achieve our goals. However in doing so, we become focused on where we are going rather than enjoying where we are right now. We sacrifice today in the hope that a better future will emerge, only to discover that achievement rarely leads to true joy. Goal-Free Living presents an alternative philosophy – that we can have an extraordinary life now, all without goals and detailed plans. By living for each moment, it’s possible to have a successful life and follow your passions at the same time….(more)
