Obama: Why aren’t we more like China?!

Barack “Citizen of the World” Obama:

Everybody’s watching what’s going on in Beijing right now with the Olympics. Think about the amount of money that China has spent on infrastructure. Their ports, their train systems, their airports are vastly the superior to us now, which means if you are a corporation deciding where to do business you’re starting to think, ‘Beijing looks like a pretty good option.’

He’s right. There are LOTS of companies reaching for that market. It’s the number 4 market for Coca-Cola (the first three are the US, Mexico, and Brazil). McDonald’s is adding 250 stores in China this year, bringing the total to 1000. Taco Bell is doubling their investment in China.

Don’t blame the weatherman if it rains on your day off. He’s just forecasting the weather, not creating it.

Why would you be surprised that China’s ports, trains, and airports are superior to ours? Theirs are new. Our train system has been deteriorating for a century. We haven’t built more than a dozen major new airports in the last quarter century. And instead of building new ports, we’re selling our ports to foreigners.

I don’t blame Coke and McDonald’s for exploiting the market of China. Better the Chinese pay royalties to US companies on what they eat, than they keep their money in their pockets. It’d be nice if we were selling a lot of US-built cars and US-built farm tractors to them, but even just collecting royalties for them building cars and tractors based on our designs keeps American engineers employed.

Obama was saying we need to rebuild our infrastructure here. Like that’s news? For decades, politician of both parties have been saying that. They haven’t been doing anything about it, but they’ve been saying that in their speeches….
