Here is the link to the bill where Barack Obama’s voted to allowed sex education to kindergarteners.

Obama voted for Bill 0099 which would have allowed Comprehensive Sex Education for children as young as Kindergarten including information on avoiding STDs, HIV infections, and contraception. At the time he even said that “it was the right thing to vote for”, but now he’s upset with John McCain for holding him accountable for it and denies saying anything about it.

Here is the video John McCain released about Obama’s vote:

Here we go, McCain “swift-boating” Obama again. Of course, we all know that in the Democratic lexicon, swift-boating means telling the truth about Obama.

  2. john says:

did you read the material??? any child can stay be kept out of the course thru parental request AND “ll (1) course material and instruction shall
    be age and developmentally appropriate.”

which means what is said to a Kindergarten kid is at their level. ask an educator what this means before spreading your BS.

and btw, MANY states also have this law in effect….

  3. Ron Ron says:

John, the problem with your analysis is that there is no such thing as age appropriate, school administered sex education for five year olds. It’s an oxymoron to say the least. That parents can opt their kids out in no way justifies the legislation. The very idea is idiotic!

  4. Tim Bucktoo says:

It is my understanding that kindergarten children are taught how to avoid sexual predators. They are also instructed on what type of adult behavior to report, such as inappropriate touching, while avoiding any graphic details. I would recommend consulting an unbiased teacher who is familiar with the material instead of using the imagination. The law places the specifics of what is taught up to the Superintendent. It is a sad but true fact that these predators out there that young children need to be aware of for their own protection. It would be negligent to ignore this type of instruction.

  5. rob says:

I agree with Tim in terms of the program. It’s main goal is to educate kids about sexual molestation. There is no condom on a banana for the 5 year olds. I disagree with Chuck’s interpretation of swiftboating. Whatever you may believe politically you must admit Republicans do a better job at the dirty politics than the Democrats. That is not necessarily bad, it’s called politics for a reason. Many states have similar programs as the one described.
What I don’t like from Obama on this is the unclear answer, justifications, or back peddling. If he voted for it he should stand up straight and say why. There are reasons why education like this should be taught, and reasons why it shouldn’t. Have a debate without the name calling or politics. I thought that was the Obama change.

  6. David A Brownlee says:

This ad is a misrepresentation, is dishonest and is a dishonor to the democratic process.

The Law reads as a guideline that the local school board would follow in instituting education that includes personal safety, abstinence and health and family issues. It even says that it should be included with other subject matter, which says to me the emphasis is on health and safety not sex. This law does not mandate any program. I would assume that the community and the involvement of parents would moderate what is actually curriculum.

More importantly, a state law is usually enacted in order to address issues in a state that the citizens have raised. Reading a law out of context with why the law was proposed is not fair or even respectful of the right of the citizens to govern their own state. Obama was not the only legislator [there are 59 state Senators and 118 state representatives - thats 176 duly elected representatives of the citizens of Illinois] and the source of the legislation is not purported here.

For non-citizens of Illinois to criticize what the duly elected representatives of the free citizens of Illinois has enacted is downright wrong and irrelevant.

In the notion of determining the values that Obama brings to the national scene, I believe that a voting record is not enough. We elect representatives to vote for or against laws based upon many conditions. What is behind the vote, whether a reflection of his own family values or the influence of a lobbyist and all influences of right compromise should be taken into account. We elect these people from varius states to manage a system of laws that can uniformly be enforced in our pluralistic society of region, religion, culture and natural selfishness.

David wrote, ” I would assume that the community and the involvement of parents would moderate what is actually curriculum.”

Well, why don’t we “assume” that the parents and community can determine what should be taught to 5 yr olds, WIITHOUT the state government mandating sex ed?

  8. kelley says:

First, thank you for posting the text of the legislation. I found it very helpful. But I would appreciate someone pointing out the objectionable part. As I read it, I found nothing I would have expected to be in dispute and as a citizen of Illinois I applaud the law. I believe we cannot assume that issues of public health will be accurately taught at home. “At home” may be the source of the inappropriate contact. “At home” may be well meaning but ill informed parents who are unable to bolster the “just say no” message with the many strong reasons why abstinence is the best approach. I do believe that matters of love and sex and relationships are best guided by parents but since the contact extends beyond the home it does become an issue of public concern and is therefore a necessary part of public education.

  9. forthardknox Jenn Sierra says:

Hi, Kelley. Thank you for your comment, and actually, if the argument you’ve presented here were the argument presented by the Obama campaign, I think most people could respect it, even if they disagreed.

Personally, I don’t think destroying the innocence of every five year old in the country is justified based on the off-chance that you might be able to help the very few who are being abused in their homes. There are other ways to help those abused children - teachers can (and are) taught to watch for and report signs of abuse.

  10. LCM says:

    I wholeheartedly agree with Kelley.

“Destroying the innocence”? Do you know the statistics on how many children are molested in some form by the time they reach 18? And I don’t mean children the same age playing doctor. What constitutes a molestation is when there is a five year age difference. So that would be a five year old and a ten year old. Big difference in size and power and it happens! Leave it to the parents? What if the parents are MIA, or worse, one of them is molesting as Kelley points out.

A lot of people have real ass-backward views about sexuality that subvert it so that it comes out in f**d up ways. Can we say thriving porn industry in US? And, after reading many ignorant posts here and other places, it’s no wonder why.

To those with knee-jerk reactions against this, do yourselves a favor: crack your minds open a little, do some research on SEXUALITY (not just sex) and molestation. A good place to start is with Debra Haffner. She has written some wonderful books on how to talk to your kids about sexuality issues from the time they are small. She went head to head with Bill IgnO Riley and, when she spoke about the importance of naming body parts with their real names, he objected about teaching kids about the word uterus. Oops! Am I allowed to say that?

The idea to expose and engage kindergarten aged children to sex education is absurd! I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m really outraged how Obama has managed to run his campaign based on deception, exaggerations, half-truths, voter registration fraud, smear campaigns, as he convinces the masses of a ideology he fondly calls, CHANGE and REFORM, clearly reflects a form of government that would alienate our freedom, liberty, and opportunity to prosper. Obama is already salivating at the thought of taxing America’s pensions, and 401k’s as another way to support his trillion dollar budget plan! America needs to wake up and stop Obama from running away with what is turning out to be a stolen election! Our forefathers and those who have given their lifes in the name of freedom , would find Obama as one who threatens the very thread of democracy, and someone who needs to be reckoned with!
