[...] Stephen Kruiser from Fort Hard Knox said: The auto industry’s problems go way beyond the current financial crisis. Plagued by greedy, strong-arm unions and greedy, weak willed execs who are so shortsighted they can’t see beyond lunch, it’s been snowballing towards oblivion for some time. The snowball just happens to be hitting peak speed right now. If it finds a way to hold off until January it will receive Federal Failure Reward package, courtesy of Chris Dodd (D-The Titanic) and the new president. [...]

I'm glad the Republicans in the Senate are finally finding some guts. I agree that the price tag will keep going up and the problems have been building for some time. But there is a single group that is responsible for both - Congress. They have the power to truly come together and formulate a long-term solution with a fixed price tag attached to it. They also should have acted much earlier to fend off the auto industry problems before they got to this point.

In this area, I feel like our Congress has failed us. I think they need to focus all of their energies on fixing the economy. Hopefully the next Congress coming in January can do a bit more than the current Congress seems to have done. Sure, let Obama know your feelings. He set up a website for just that purpose. But don't forget your other elected representatives who really have more power in this situation because they control the budget.

People need to write their congressional representatives and ask them to make fixing the economy their top priority. Or, join with a group to help strengthen your voice by signing a petition. It is much quicker than writing your congressperson, and it still sends a message to Congress to take action. Here's one petition like that - it is from the Friends of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to the new Congress to fix the economy first - http://www.friendsoftheuschamber.com/email/email4.cfm?id=171
