Obama can only hope the GOP will not do as he does

ABC News observes that President Obama is the first (and only) president to have voted to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee. Apparently the GOP is not considering a filibuster but Obama has already set a demanding timetable to get his nomination through. In 2006 then Senator Obama voted for a filibuster on Samuel Alito stating:
“…I think Judge Alito, in fact, is somebody who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values, you know. When you look at his decisions in particular during times of war, we need a court that is independent and is going to provide some check on the executive branch, and he has not shown himself willing to do that repeatedly.”
Just as remarkable is that Sonia Sotomayor is anything but independent. Both share similar philosophies, the core of which is viewing the constitution as a hindrance to their social agendas.

Shelby County, TN is set to vote on an ordinance that would grant special protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition to special privileges it appears the ordinance would would directly impact contractors who do not support the gay agenda. Section 12-127, for instance, states:
Discrimination by a contractor who contracts with Shelby County Government against a contractor’s employee on the basis of Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity or Expression shall be prohibited. (c) Discrimination by a private Employer in an unincorporated area of Shelby County against any person employed by such private Employer on the basis of Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity or Expression is prohibited, subject to the limitations in state law and the Shelby County Charter. (d) The provisions of this article pertaining to contractors shall only apply to contracts with Shelby County Government for which an RFP, or any sealed bid or proposal is issued after July 1, 2009.
The vote is expected this Monday July 1st, 2009.

Thanks To Sotomayor, I Get To Be a Racist
May 29, 2009 by Orlando

Thanks to Judge Sonia Sotomayor, I now know it is good to be a racist. Not only will it be overlooked, but I will get rewarded! I get this because my skin is brown.
All this time, I thought if I worked hard, treated people with respect, got my education, played by the rules, adored the constitution, and a sought to be a patriotic American citizen that would lead to success. Stupid me! However, thanks to the Grand Wizard herself, Sonia “Better Conclusion” Sotomayor I have come to realize I just need to throw some racial epitaphs into my language, be condescending, throw around the race card, join exclusive race groups, and all will be given to me.
There’s an added bonus. I can be as racist as I want, but white people can’t. You see, it is a one-way street. If a white person were to say something racist to me, I could flag them as a hatemonger and go running to the Obamniacs who would gladly take my side. In fact, white people wouldn’t even have to say a racist word. My accusation that they are the racist would be all I need.
Well, I’m off to find my brown KKK hood and robe, stand in line for free stuff, and watch those promotions start rolling in. Wish me luck!

Twitter Not Always Annoying
May 29, 2009 by Paul Jacob

You’ve probably heard of Twitter, now that @Oprah has. It is a “micro-blogging” tool that lets you keep in touch with people by sending messages of 140 characters or less, maybe 30 words. Senders are supposed to answer the question, “What are you doing right now?”
This sounds like a lot of people telling each other they’re hunting for a renegade sock or catching the bus. But people and imagination being what they are, savvy practitioners assure us that Twitter has been put to a very wide variety of uses, not all of them snooze-worthy.
I was sold as soon as I heard how it was used last year to help get innocent men out of jail.
James Karl Buck (@jamesbuck), an American grad student, was arrested in April 2008 while covering an anti-government protest in Egypt. So was his translator, Mohammed Maree. Conciseness being the better part of valor, Buck sent a one-word “tweet” to his “followers” on Twitter. To wit: “Arrested.”
Recipients knew that Buck was in Egypt covering a political demonstration. So comprehension was immediate, action swift. Soon, Buck’s college hired a lawyer to represent him. Soon thereafter he sent another message: “Free.”
His Egyptian translator, Mohammed Maree, was not so lucky. Buck worked hard to help his friend. Twitter was one of his tools. Three months later, Mohammed was free as well.
This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

Religious Citizens Targeted in Alameda, CA for ‘Intolerable’ Views
May 29, 2009 by Jenn Sierra
Filed under California, News and Opinion
Karen England, Executive Director of the Capitol Resource Institute in California, writes:
The intolerance against those with religious or traditional moral views is reaching new lows and no where is that clearer than Alameda.
On Tuesday evening the school board in the Bay Area city voted 3-2 to approve curriculum promoting homosexuality to kindergartners, despite vehement and overwhelming opposition from the community. Promoters of the curriculum are so bent on indoctrinating students that they refused a parental op- out provision, even though parents plead for the board to respect their right to protect their children.
“Polling CRI conducted in the city found that over half of city residents opposed the curriculum,” stated Karen England, executive director of CRI. “Even many of those who did support the curriculum still favored a parental opt-out.”
England was present at the last three meetings of the school board after parents contacted CRI’s office and asked for help in stopping the curriculum’s adoption. A veteran of advocating for parental rights at the school board level, England testified on behalf of parents at two of the meetings.
“At this week’s meeting, I heard one of the most outrageous and alarming things I’ve ever heard at any meeting,” commented England. “Alameda school board vice president Ron Mooney actually told parents that the school board will provide no protections for one of the state-mandated protected classes: the religious.”
During the meeting Mooney responded to a question about whether religious students would be respected for disagreeing with the curriculum, he responded that they may disagree, but only at home; they may not carry those views into the classroom.
Placing himself as the arbiter of what is acceptable morality for all people in his district, Mooney asserted that he saw nothing wrong with homosexuality. The general tenor of Mooney and his peers’ remarks reveals that they are themselves intolerant of those with religious beliefs. They knowingly voted for a biased curriculum that specifically excludes religion, turning a deaf ear to the parents who presented cases of religious intolerance in the school district.
Many supporters of the curriculum called opponents bigots and homophobes, engaging in the very name- calling they claim to want to end in their schools. Some even cited religion as the greatest hindrance to stopping bullying and fostering tolerance.
“There is clearly religious bigotry in this district, but it’s not coming from the parents opposing this curriculum- it’s coming directly from the intolerant members of the school board,” explained England. “The board is targeting people of faith, as evidenced by the vice president’s bigoted remarks. Mr. Mooney’s unprofessional behavior gives license to those who engage in the name-calling and bullying parents experienced at these meetings.”
Alameda parents outraged by the complete disregard for the input are discussing how to move forward and hold their elected officials accountable.

San Diego Says No Bible Study at Home
May 28, 2009 by Orlando
Filed under California, News and Opinion
A couple in San Diego, CA was fined and told to cease and desist for having a Bible study in their home. The county of San Diego came to the home of Pastor David Jones and his wife that their weekly meetings were a violation of country law. They were to “stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit.” That permit costs $10,000.
As The Canada Free Press reports the Jones were asked the following:
“‘Do you have a regular meeting in your home?” The pastor’s wife replied, “Yes.” “Do you say ‘amen’?” the official asked. “Yes,” she replied. “Do you pray?” Again she said, “Yes.” “Do you say ‘praise the Lord’?” Another “Yes.” The official told the pastor and his wife they were in violation of county rules.
Fox News further reports:
“On Good Friday we had an employee from San Diego County come to our house, and inform us that the bible study that we were having was a religious assembly, and in violation of the code in the county.” David Jones told FOX News.
“We told them this is not really a religious assembly — this is just a bible study with friends. We have a meal, we pray, that was all,” Jones said.
A few days later, the couple received a written warning that cited “unlawful use of land,” ordering them to either “stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit,” the couple’s attorney Dean Broyles told San Diego news station 10News.
The county, to date, is not backing down. Bible studies are “religious assembly” which they feel requires a permit. Bible studies are violations of the law? Be careful if you pray at the dinner table, the government may come for you next.
Baby Boomers Appear to Be Ditching Facebook

Mashable.com is reporting that Baby Boomers are ditching Facebook–or so it seems. All the trends seem to point out that those over 55 were bubble Baby Boomers on Facebook. Well, the bubble seems to have burst. As Mashable points out:
Between November 2008 and February 2009, the baby boomer set (age 55-65) was one of the fastest growing segments on the social network, up 175.3% for females and 137.8% for males, according to the statistics. But that user boom was short-lived, and those users aren’t returning in the same numbers. In April and May there were actually 650,000 less users over the age of 55 on Facebook than the previous two months — the only age demographic where the site experienced a decrease in users over that period.
Well, so much for the older generation and technology. Maybe it’s a return to snail mail.

Marine Veteran Threatened with Fines, Towing by HOA for Patriotic Bumper Stickers
May 28, 2009 by Jenn Sierra
Filed under News and Opinion, Texas
When I first read this headline on Twitter, I envisioned an old clunker held together with bumper stickers. I thought perhaps this neighborhood homeowner’s association was trying to rid their neighborhood of an eyesore. Not that that would excuse their behavior – generally, in America, protection from eyesores is not considered a basic human right.
However, I was quite surprised to see that this gentleman’s late-model vehicle had just a tasteful smattering of small patriotic symbols on it. As the news reporter pointed out, other cars in this neighborhood had various political and social statement magnets and stickers as well.
So, why was this person targeted and threatened with having his fines and having his vehicle towed?
