When broached about why I say ma'am I have a standard response. "I call all females from age 6 up ma'am out of respect ... for my mother who taught me manners". I'm sure "ma'am" was one of the nicer names Brigadier General Walsh could have thought of to call her in that moment. He was extremely gracious about the exchange.
