Where Have All the Conservatives Gone on Digg?

» by Orlando in: Uncategorized

digg exit The number of conservatives on Digg was far larger 10 months ago.  What happened between then and now?

I recall 10 months ago, a Little Green Footballs story would get several hundred diggs.  One LGF story even made the front page with over 2000 diggs and it wasn’t unusual for a conservative to get their article to the front page (though rare).

Now, you are lucky to see a few dozen diggs for a conservative story and none ever make the front pages.  Many of the more active conservatives have turned their backs on Digg.

The answer is simple.  Conservatives got tired of being censored and buried on Digg.  They took their activities to other sites and blogs.  What’s left on Digg are the same hate Bush, hate Cheney, and life sucks stories over and over again.

From a business perspective, Digg is the big loser.  Conservative ex-diggers are like other consumers who will tell 10 others what a lousy site Digg has become.  From an organizational viewpoint, this only serves to hurt Digg in the long run.  Red state America accounts for more than half the population.  It’s bad business to treat your customers and potential customers with contempt.

Unfortunately, the site population is past the tipping point and will only become more so. It’s self-perpetuating. Conservative or libertarian-leaning folks sign up and think, “Woah, where did all these self-important loonies come from? And why are there so many impeachment stories?” After they realize how slanted the site is, they leave. Leftists join up and think, “Finally! I can share my wisdom and get dugg up instead of laughed at! I gotta tell my friends about this place.” Digg will either alter their “algorithms” or the conservatives will eventually give up and leave altogether.

Fortunately, the only votes that really count are the ones in the ballot box.

It is the same way at reddit. I can’t find anything over there but far left articles. Newsvine isn’t as bad, but it has its days.

I encourage all the ex-Diggers to try Newsvine out. We conservatives could use a few more of us over there.
