Hard drives are slow compared to the rest of a computer system, but one way to improve their operation is the “Defragmenter” that comes with MS Windows. This is normally found by clicking (in this order):
- Start
- All Programs
- Accessories
- System Tools
- Disk Defragmenter
An article on how disk defrag works is here. If you want to understand how hard drives work that information is here.
Depending on how much you surf and download, you should defrag at least monthly. Prior to defragging I recommend you empty your recycle bin and do a “Disk Cleanup”. This will remove old data from your computer that you no longer need and further assist your HDD (hard disk drive) in compacting and relocating your data. Defragging takes time but saves you time in the long run and prolongs the life of your HDD.
