In a recent TV documentary about New Orleans, an 18th century lithograph showed a rustic settlement surrounded by levees. The narrator explained that the people knew from the very start that New Orleans was eternally susceptible to terminal flooding.
Yet, when Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast in 2005 and when New Orleans’ levees finally were catastrophically breached on August 29 of that year after 300 years of warnings, chaos ensued as if nobody ever had been alerted. The media and their Democrat friends started finger-pointing fast and furious, the prime targets being President Bush, the Republican Party and any other conservative figure who could be tied to the disaster. Or rather ABU – Anybody But Us, the people of New Orleans.
And with the disastrous performance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, more and more media pressure was heaped on Bush without regard to the fact that we conservatives have been warning for millennia that government bureaucracies are incompetent, and that citizens should not rely on them. Over the period of a full month, FEMA could not even deliver ice to Katrina survivors, while loaded private-sector Wal-Mart trucks had arrived on the scene within two days.
Fast forward to October 2007 and the Southern California fires. There we have 15 million people living in a beautiful but arid region that is not stony and barren but that is vegetated by highly flammable chaparral brush and dry tinderbox forest. The slightest provocation in this climate – including one fire known to have been started by a downed power line, and two others known to be a result of arson – means trouble. But again if we Americans choose to live in vulnerable areas, we must be aware that there may be a price to be paid. Natural disaster can strike anywhere. We are warned.
Within the first two days of the California disaster, however, the Democrats again were on the warpath, with US Senator Barbara Boxer claiming that the California National Guard was unable to respond because too many assets and personnel had been deployed to Iraq.
Yet not only was this a non-sequitur because the Guard was not needed to fight the fires, but the state’s own Guard chief responded that the charge was nonsense. Boxer ended up retreating, while the original anti-Bush message lingered in the public consciousness because it had been broadcast nationwide.
And the cheap shots go on and on.
Boxer’s broadside was eerily similar to the immediate attack made by Kansas’ liberal-left Governor Kathleen Sebelius last May when a tornado devastated the town of Greensburg. At the very first media opportunity, Sebelius charged that the Kansas National Guard could not adequately respond to Greensburg because… so much personnel and materiel had been sent to Iraq.
But like California, she never ended up needing the equipment or the Guard anyway, so the attack was gratuitous and moot. It was all a setup. And it is part of a pattern of behavior coming from the hard and angry political left that today controls the Democrat party.
What we have witnessed in Kansas, California, New Orleans and other places are natural disasters. Yet every one of them is being immediately politicized by the Democrats for their own gain, revealing modern-day liberals for who they truly are; the party of shameless political opportunism.
In the case of New Orleans, however, we easily can see their accusing fingers pointing straight back at themselves three times over. Because it was the corrupt city’s political machine and welfare state that have siphoned off tens of billions in federal and state aid over the last 100 years while the levees lagged. And it was not Republicans in charge of the city; the Democrats run The Big Easy lock, stock and barrel. And as usual, they had no interest in making certain that the city was safe, but only in business as usual, with money, money and more money at the core of every political calculation.
The sight of hundreds of unused public school buses submerged under 10 feet of water as 50,000 New Orleans residents huddled post-Katrina in the Superdome with no way out of town exposes the disastrous nature of the city’s emergency preparedness, and a callous disregard of the common good.
Democrats indeed… The party of compassion?
The party of ‘the common good’?
Doubt it.
Meanwhile, the usual ‘global warming’ (GW) hysteria has bubbled up all over the place blaming the Louisiana hurricane, the alleged uptick in Midwestern tornadoes, and the California fires on Al Gore’s nonsensical and unproven ‘planetary heating emergency’. Never mind that hurricanes have roared forever, tornados come every year, fires have been burning all over the earth since time immemorial and that California’s current drought is one in a long string. But that didn’t stop Democrat US Senate majority leader Harry Reid from saying publicly “the reason we have the fires in California is global warming,” then only six minutes later, in the very same press conference, denying he said it.
Oregon’s Reese Halter, who is labeled a ‘global warming’ authority, said of the California fires, “Welcome to a warming world.”
So Mr. Halter, what is it about a warming climate that would start fires anyway?
The answer is “nothing”. It’s all bull.
This is what has come to be accepted practice in today’s opportunist socialism, people who simply cannot face up to believe what they say, or say what they believe. Theirs is a weird psychological complex that comes out of insecurity, arrogance, narcissism and an incessant need for instant gratification. Just blurt out anything that makes you feel politically good, and the truth be damned.
We conservatives, on the other hand, believe in absolutes of truth, in right and wrong, in understanding the difference between black and white… and gray. That is why we do not attack gratuitously – say, blaming Bill Clinton for the fires or the hurricanes — but why we must start to defend ourselves vigorously and expose the nonsense coming from the left, including the alarmists who blame everything from bad hair to flat tires on ‘global warming’.
And it is important to recall that liberal/left “scientists” like Halter get more rich and more famous every time they appear on television to denounce ‘global warming’. So there is a reason for their pronouncements. It is called money, just like all those billions that have disappeared down New Orleans’ political rathole. Follow the cash, friends, and you will see. ‘Global warming’ and the natural disaster blame-game are nothing more than another Hollywood movie, with its actors paid well and saying anything in the script that is in their own personal, political and financial interest.
Remember finally too that these people are using the California fires as a political tool because the disastrous hurricanes that the ‘global warming’ greenies breathlessly predicted for 2007 have not materialized. So they must go to another expedient fear source.
