You know, I was wondering when someone was going to pick this topic up. I have been a bit shocked that Hollywood would pick this as a subject for a movie. One could argue (not me, but someone) that the actions of Charlie Wilson paved the way for the Taliban and Al Quaeda, certainly the rise of the Mujahideen and O.S.B. But Afghanistan back then was the front for our opposing Communism and I certainly don’t disagree with his actions. Who could have forseen such things as 9/11 back then?

An interesting point but true. His actions helped the Taliban get power and Osama bin Laden had a safe harbor. Did Charlie Wilson help or hurt us?

I can’t say. I believe I would have felt that we were doing the right thing with the Afghanis against the Soviets had I been old enough to really pay attention back then. We could perhaps learn from the past that sometimes the enemy of my enemy is NOT my friend, even one of convenience. I almost agree with Dr. Paul on this topic. :-P

I hear you on that issue. I thought it was best to take on the Soviets that way but it didn’t turn out well for America in the long wrong. Maybe a non-intervention strategy is best as Dr. Paul suggests. I’ve been giving it some thought lately but I’m still not sure. It sounds good but I wonder if it is practical.
