The Henry J. Hyde Defender of Life Award was established to honor the legacy of Representative Henry J. Hyde, former Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Each year, it is awarded to an elected official who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the cause of Life.

This award was recently covered by National Journal and Life News.

Americans United for Life (AUL) is a nonprofit, public- interest law and policy organization whose vision is a nation in which everyone is welcomed in life and protected in law. The first national pro-life organization in America, AUL has been committed to defending human life through vigorous judicial, legislative, and educational efforts at both the federal and state levels since 1971.

AUL’s legal team has been involved in every pro-life case before the U.S. Supreme Court including the successful defense of the Hyde Amendment. AUL also publishes Defending Life, the most comprehensive state-by-state legal guide of its kind, which is distributed annually to legislators across the nation.

Recently, Americans United for Life detailed the facts on taxpayer-funding of abortion during the debate over federal health care legislation, provided legal assistance to states working to opt out of abortion provisions created by federal health care law, and has taken a leading role in educating policymakers on the record of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees.

After much speculation, news reports confirm that United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens will be stepping down from the Court this summer.

Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), said,

“The news is no shock for those of us who follow the issue. Justice Stevens has been sending all the signals for the White House to be prepared. Our hope is that President Obama has had time to reflect on the issue and will make a change in the way he has looked at nominations. Will he nominate a justice who will show respect for our laws and the Constitution or will he continue to put ideology over the will of the majority of Americans?

“All three of the nominees in the short list are not encouraging. Elena Kagan’s apparent willingness to look at international law when deciding domestic cases, Judge Merrick Garland’s support of granting constitutional rights to enemy combatants, and Diane Wood’s extremely radical pro-abortion activism should bring chills to every American. We know the President can do better than that.”

CWA President Wendy Wright said,

“Coming off of a debate over health care that has deeply divided the country against Pres. Obama, in which he ignored the Constitution and foisted his contentious beliefs onto millions of Americans, President Obama desperately needs to choose a qualified and Constitutionally-sound nominee. It would be healing for the country for President Obama to change course and select a nominee that respects the Constitution more than their own — or foreign countries’ — ideology.”

Mario Diaz, Esq., CWA’s Policy Director for Legal Issues, said,

“The President has the opportunity to change the radically divisive image he has created in the minds of many Americans. If he decides to nominate someone who respects the Constitution as written, instead of someone who believes in a living Constitution that they can mold to say whatever they want, he can do a lot to repair his image.

“Last time, even his own nominee, Justice Sotomayor, rejected the President’s idea of the role of a judge, even though her own record lined right up with the President’s radical view. That is how radical the President’s view is in this area. So if experience tells us anything, it tells us he will go with ideology instead of what is best for the country, but we hope and pray that we can finally see a ‘change,’ like he promised us.”

Concerned Women for America is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.

From Operation Rescue:

WICHITA, KS (Christian Newswire) — Telephones at Operation Rescue’s national headquarters were inundated with hateful messages in the wake of the weekend vote on health care in the House of Representatives. Operation Rescue has been outspoken in its opposition to the Obama health care takeover plan, especially provisions that would provide taxpayer funding for abortions.

The calls filled the mailboxes of several extensions and ranged from nonsensical messages, to sexually explicit “dirty phone calls,” to anti-Christian, hate-filled tirades. In weeks preceding the vote Operation Rescue staff members received death threats.

“Normally we don’t give the threats and hateful calls we receive much thought. But lately there has been much made about threats to Democrats that supported the health care takeover, and we thought that people needed to know that the hate calls are flowing both ways,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

“This kind of harassment and intimidation will never deter us from our mission to save the lives of innocent babies and stop abortion in our nation,” said Newman. “However, we do take security precautions and are working with the FBI, which continues to investigate death threats against me and my staff.”

Listen to sampling of the calls (Warning: Strong language)

About Operation Rescue® is one of the leading pro-life Christian activist organizations in the nation and has become a strong voice for the pro-life movement in America. Operation Rescue is now headquartered in a former abortion clinic that it bought and closed in 2006. From there, Operation Rescue launches its innovative new strategies across the nation, exposing and closing abortion clinics through peaceful, legal means. Its activities are on the cutting edge of the abortion issue, taking direct action to stop abortion and ultimately restore legal personhood to the pre-born in obedience to biblical mandates.

Update 03/23/10): See Why The Senate Bill Funds Abortions: Bart Stupak’s Abortion Bait and Switch, on Maggie’s Notebook

Some conservatives are not buying the idea that there will be no taxpayer funding for abortions in the new health care bill.

From the SBA List:

Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued the following statement on a potential Executive Order from the White House to address concerns about abortion funding in the health care legislation:

“An executive order on abortion funding would do nothing to fix the problems presented by the current health care reform legislation that the House is considering today. The very idea is a slap in the face to the pro-life movement and should be offensive to all pro- life Members of Congress. An executive order can be rescinded at any time at the President’s whim. The courts could and have a history of trumping executive orders.

“If this was a sincere attempt to meet pro-life concerns then you would hear the cry of pro-choice Members and groups. Rather Rep. Diana Degette, co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus told The Huffington Post on Saturday that ‘If there was an executive order saying they weren’t going to use federal funds in the bill to pay for abortions that would be fine with me, because we’ve stipulated to that even though we don’t like it, That’s the compromise we came to way back in July.’

“In the end, no pro-life Member of Congress could, in good conscience, play politics with the lives of hundreds of unborn children. If they do, there will be a quick downhill slide to defeat on Election Day.”

The Susan B. Anthony List has been leading the fight against abortion funding in health care reform for over a year, spending nearly $2 million on a grassroots campaign of targeted television and radio ads, 1.3 million automated calls, 70,000 patch-through constituent calls, 1.2 million letters and petitions to Congress, two media and grassroots tours in pro-life Democratic districts, television ads in six districts and comprehensive polling in 20 pro-life Democratic districts.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of Americans, over 280,000 residing in all 50 states, dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.

From the Family Research Council:

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement in response to reports that President Obama may issue an executive order regarding government funding of elective abortions in the Senate health care bill (H.R. 3590):

“Those few pro-life Democrats that would place the fate of the unborn in the hands of the President, will be placing their own political fate in those same hands secured only by a promise that runs counter to everything he has said and done.

“By offering an executive order as a so-called solution, President Obama is finally admitting there is a problem with a bill that would force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions for the first time in over three decades. However, there is no way that an executive order will protect the unborn or prevent the greatest expansion of elective abortion since Roe v. Wade.

“Pro-life lawmakers would be making a serious mistake to trust those who have repeatedly attempted to mislead the American people into believing that abortion is not in the bill.

“President Obama and the Democratic leadership know that such a plan, due to legal precedent, would be worth little in the long run. Court rulings in cases such as Commerce of U.S. v Reich and Hamdan v. Rumsfeld make it very clear that such an executive order likely wouldn’t survive.

“Regardless of any executive order, the reconciliation bill will make matters worse by increasing funding for community health centers, which will bypass any abortion funding restrictions in appropriations bills because it is directly appropriated.

“The President could also lift such an executive order at any time with a stroke of a pen. During the campaign, President Obama promised he would treat abortion as a basic health care mandate for both taxpayers and private health insurers to subsidize. He told Planned Parenthood that ‘reproductive care’ would be at the ‘center’ of his health care plan.

“And after only three days in office, he lifted the Mexico City Policy which prohibited taxpayer funds from going to foreign non-governmental organizations that promote and perform abortions.

“Since massive abortion funding remains in these bills and an executive order would provide no protections, FRC Action still plans to score votes on both the Senate bill and the reconciliation bill in our annual scorecard.”

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH):

“The law of the land trumps any Executive Order, which can be reversed or altered at the stroke of a pen by this or any subsequent President without any congressional approval or notice. Moreover, while an Executive Order can direct members of the executive branch, it cannot direct the private sector.

“Because of Roe v. Wade, courts have interpreted the decision as a statutory mandate that the government must provide federal funding for elective abortion in through federal programs. In other words, no Executive Order or regulation can override a statutory mandate unless Congress passes a law that prohibits federal funding from being used in this manner. Legal experts at the US Catholic Conference of Bishops, National Right to Life Committee, Americans United for Life, and Family Research Council have confirmed this view that if the Senate bill is signed into law, it is a statutory mandate for the new health plans to include federal funding of elective abortion. The need for an Executive Order is evidence that this is true, and Congressional Democrats know it. Make no mistake, a ‘yes’ vote on the Democrats’ health care bill is a vote for taxpayer-funded abortions.”

From Charmaine Yoest, President & CEO of Americans United for Life Action:

“This deal to pass the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade is a tragedy for America. We believe that Mr. Stupak’s choice to succumb to the intense pressure of the last week has resulted in his endorsement of a charade that does not even begin to address the anti-life provisions in this legislation. The American people do not support taxpayer funding of abortion and Speaker Pelosi and the President have undermined representative democracy by working to pass this legislation with this unprecedented contortion of the legislative process.”

From Concerned Women for America:

Rep. Bart Stupak (D- Michigan) and five other formerly pro-life Democrats [Rep. Steve Driehaus (D-Ohio), Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper (D- Pennsylvania), Rep. Nick Rahall (D- West Virginia), Rep. Alan Mollohan (D- West Virginia), Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D- Ohio)] have reached a deal that would give them “political cover” to vote in favor of the President’s health care bill. Their sellout ensures that this bill will indeed be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.

The deal made includes an illusory promise from the President that after his health care bill passes, he will sign an executive order to ensure that the Hyde Amendment is applied to the bill. However, it is the height of absurdity to trust the most pro-abortion President in history, especially in a back room deal he is surely using to scrape a few more votes from the bottom of the barrel.

Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) CEO Penny Nance said, “Our members know that under the Constitution of this country, Congress makes the laws of the country and not the President. This executive order is not worth the paper on which it’s written. An executive order from the President can be just as easily undone. The fact that Rep. Stupak says this is a strong statement by President Obama outlining his intent is utterly astounding especially since President Obama is the one who ensured that the Stupak-Pitts pro-life amendment was not included in the Senate bill.”

When confronted earlier by CWA regarding rumors that he would flip his vote, Rep. Stupak made it clear that he placed sole responsibility on the Senate for this expansion of abortion. Rep. Stupak and those formerly pro-life Democrats who followed his lead in this compromise cannot shirk their responsibility to protect the sanctity of human life. CWA and our members will take no excuses.

Concerned Women for America is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.

From the National Right to Life Committee:

In response to today’s announcement regarding an agreement between Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mi.) and President Obama on the pending health care bill (H.R. 3590), the following statement was issued by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of right-to-life organizations in the 50 states:

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) remains strongly opposed to the Senate-passed health bill (H.R. 3590). A lawmaker who votes for this bill is voting to require federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortion, and voting to undermine longstanding pro-life policies in other ways as well. Pro-life citizens nationwide know that this is a pro-abortion bill. Pro-life citizens know, and they will be reminded again and again, which lawmakers deserve their gratitude for voting against this pro-abortion legislation.

The executive order promised by President Obama was issued for political effect. It changes nothing. It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions in the bill. The president cannot amend a bill by issuing an order, and the federal courts will enforce what the law says.

To elaborate: The order does not truly correct any of the seven objectionable pro-abortion provisions described in NRLC’s March 19 letter to the House of Representatives, which is posted HERE.

Regarding Community Health Centers (CHCs), NRLC has documented the problem created by H.R. 3590 HERE.

Prof. Robert Destro, a professor of law and former dean of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, and an expert on abortion-related litigation, has sent lawmakers a letter explaining why the bill opens the door to direct federal funding of abortion in Community Health Centers. Prof. Destro clearly explains why it is the statutory language that will govern.

Regarding the new program to provide tax credits to purchase private insurance, the executive order merely tinkers with the formalities of a bookkeeping scheme under which federal subsidies will pay for plans that cover elective abortion — a break from the longstanding principles of the Hyde Amendment.

The order does nothing at all to mitigate the other abortion-related problems described in the NRLC letter, dealing with bill provisions that create dangerous regulatory mandate authorities, revise Indian health programs, and create pools of directly appropriated funds that are not covered by existing restrictions on funding of abortion. Nor can the order correct the omission from the pending legislation of the necessary conscience- protection language that had been included in House- passed health care legislation last November (the “Weldon language”).

For additional information regarding the abortion-related components of the legislation, and NRLC’s assessment of the gravity of these issues, please refer to the March 19 letter linked above, and other materials posted on the NRLC website at NRLC.org.

From Operation Rescue:

Rep. Bart Stupak caved in on his commitment to oppose the pro-abortion health care bill today by making a special deal with the White House. In exchange for Stupak’s vote and that of the others in his coalition, Obama has agreed to sign an executive order after the health care bill is passed that would supposedly prohibit public funds from paying for abortions, especially in community health clinics that are slated to receive a huge boost in tax funding.

However, Obama’s executive order can be rescinded at any time, and will likely expire well before the health care plan will go into effect four years from now – if he even signs the order at all. More importantly, the law as written trumps an executive order making it likely that the order would not hold up in court if challenged by the abortion lobby.

The Stupak coalition support will presumably allow the highly unpopular health bill to pass later this evening.

“This should really be called the Planned Parenthood bailout bill,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Obama told Planned Parenthood that abortion funding is at the heart of his health care proposal and that he would not yield on that issue. When you take out something’s heart it dies.

“Stupak’s, executive order isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. We predict that as surely as the sun rises in the east, something will happen to negate that executive order between now and when the funding will begin. Stupak has made a deal with the devil that will cost millions of lives.”

Even if Obama’s health care bill is finally signed into law, there remain constitutional questions about provisions, especially those that would force the uninsured to buy government insurance then levy fines and other punishment on those who do not buy the required insurance. Over 30 State Attorneys General have vowed to challenge the legality and constitutionality of the bill in court.

“Operation Rescue supports efforts to oppose this ill- conceived abortion-funding scheme in the streets through peaceful protest, in the courts, and at the ballot box,” said Newman. “We are taking notes, and will let it be known that a vote for this health care bill is a vote for abortion. It is certain that in spite of the outcome of today’s political shenanigans, this is not over yet.”

About Operation Rescue® Operation Rescue is one of the leading pro-life Christian activist organizations in the nation and has become a strong voice for the pro-life movement in America.

RightBias Idiot Awards

TOP IDIOTS OF THE WEEK:

Rep. Xavier Becerra (D–CA) earns our Top Idiot of the Week award. He is caught laughing out loud when a staff member from Ari David For Congress suggests that they start off their SEIU meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

A teacher in Winnipeg also makes this week’s Top Idiot list. At a high-school pep rally, she decided to express her inner slut. The ensuing lap dance was outrageous enough that she was told not to report back to work. She may be out of a job but she has garnered her fifteen minutes of fame, with the video of her lap dance becoming an internet hit. Ah, trade-offs.

Speaking of fifteen minutes of fame: A woman who calls herself Angie the Atheist is desperately seeking her own fifteen minutes of fame. She decided to live-blog her drug-induced abortion. She posted updates on Twitter as she killed her own fetus.

The number of outright lies issuing forth from our public servants hit fever pitch last week. Since these whoppers were virtually unchallenged by the old media, RightBias.com has been forced to ad yet another category to our Top Idiots of the Week Awards.

BIGGEST WHOPPER OF THE WEEK:

President Obama takes top honors, as he stated to a crowd of CEO’s that he was not a socialist. Adding insult to insult, he also stated “I am a firm believer in the free market.” Since his actions say the opposite, we can only conclude that the left has, once again, redefined the offending labels.

RUNNER-UP:

The Environmental Protection Agency, responding to complaints about its December findings about the threat of greenhouse gases, issued a statement Friday saying that the “science is settled.” Since the old media has declined to report on the fact that the science behind global warming claims has been totally corrupted, we can only suggest that the EPA start tuning in to Fox for the straight poop.

HONORABLE MENTION:

In the midst of record snow fall all over the U.S. and a recent admission from global warming advocate Phil Jones that there has been no warming since 1995, Father Earth, Al Gore, is sticking to his guns. “The climate crisis is worse than we thought,” Gore said with a straight face. Yawn…

A top Obama administration scientist on Monday struck back at climate skeptics who claim that record snowstorms this winter have undercut evidence of global warming. “Weather is not climate,” he informed the nation. Inquiring minds want to know: Since when?

Obama make our list yet again. He hailed Wednesday’s one-year-old economic stimulus law as ‘an accomplishment that staved off another Great Depression and kept up to 2 million people on the job.’ Right….

MOST IDIOTIC STATEMENT:

One of my favorite actors takes top honors this week. Jeff Bridges stated, “Barack Obama is my champion; I am rooting for him – he said we can eradicate childhood hunger by 2015.” That Bridges can believe Obama’s utopian promises says more about Bridges than about Obama. Sigh.

MOST IDIOTIC LAWSUITS:

The family of Rachel Corrie is suing the Israeli Defense Ministry for the death of their daughter 7 years ago. Remember Rachel? She’s the useful idiot that stood right in the path of an Israeli bulldozer and got, well, bulldozed. Here’s a thought: How about Rachel’s family be held accountable for never teaching their daughter that if one stands in front of a moving bulldozer, one will be bulldozed. Duh.

Sluggerrr the Lion — the mascot for the Kansas City Royals — is accused of poking a fan’s eye out with a steaming hot wiener during a Major League Baseball game last year … and now the team is being sued over it. Hey, a weiner is better than a sharp stick.

So many idiots, so little space.
Till next week, keep smiling,

It’s David vs. Goliath as fifth generation Montanan and businessman Steve Daines has taken on U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester. One of the architects of “Obamacare,” Baucus has ignored the opinions of the taxpayers in his state of Montana, the majority of whom do NOT want the healthcare plan currently proposed.

The healthcare debate is far from over and ordinary citizens like Daines are stepping up to challenge promoters of the healthcare plan before it’s too late.

Daines has been featured in radio ads calling out Baucus and Tester for turning a deaf ear to their constituents who do not want to be forced to buy insurance or fund abortion on demand.

Daines will be in Washington, D.C., Feb. 21-23 and is available for interviews. Call Maryam Kubasek with Common Sense Issues, Inc., at 513.226.9538 to set up an interview.

A non-partisan coalition of organizations dedicated to fostering active participation of citizens in the political process has announced a series of “Voter Registration Sundays” for 2010. The groups, called the “Vote Pro-life Coalition” are urging pastors of all denominations, as well as leaders of other organizations, to give their people the opportunity to register to vote at Church services and other gatherings.

The designated weekends are March 14, May 23, July 4, and September 12.

“Enabling people to register to vote is a noble way to exercise and foster responsible citizenship,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, which initiated the Coalition. “This activity on the part of Churches and other tax-exempt entities is fully permitted by civil law and fully consistent with the Gospel mandate to change the world. The purpose of our coalition is to motivate and encourage leaders to engage in activities like this. We will provide helpful guidance, but our goal is that the Churches and organizations themselves actually carry out the work.”

The website www.PoliticalResponsibility.com will provide resources, including voter registration guidelines, dates, and requirements for each state.

Among the members of this growing Coalition are American Values, Anglicans for Life, CatholicVote.org, Citizens for a Pro-life Society, Gospel of Life Ministries, The Heidi Group, The Justice Foundation, Life Coalition International, LifeNews.com, National Clergy Council, National Pro-life Religious Council, Operation Outcry, Priests for Life, Susan B. Anthony List, and Wallbuilders.

Priests for Life is the nation’s largest Catholic pro- life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. For more information, visit www.priestsforlife.org.

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, Southeast Region Operations announces a major upgrade to its website, ProLifeOnCampus.com.

CBR is “winning hearts, changing minds, and saving lives.” CBR doesn’t just claim it; CBR proves it. Visitors to the website will see and hear students, political leaders, and post-abortive women talk about how CBR projects are working. One video features Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The website describes CBR’s campus outreach project, but other projects are also included, e.g., CBR’s truth trucks.

CBR Southeast Director Dr. Fletcher Armstrong had this to say,

“ProLifeOnCampus.com shows how CBR projects are winning hearts, changing minds, and saving lives. Based on principles learned from the Civil Rights Era, from the movement to abolish abusive child labor, etc., we are changing the pro-life movement. We will no longer help Planned Parenthood cover up the truth of abortion. Just like Dr. King, Lewis Hine, and William Wilberforce, we will show people what injustice looks like. ProLifeOnCampus.com demonstrates our pictures are working, both on the campus and in the broader culture.”

“I wish every city with an abortion facility will one day be able to participate in the 40 Days for Life campaign,” said David Bereit, national director of 40 Days for Life. “But for one night at least, we will be able to give people all over the world an opportunity to see firsthand what this unique pro-life outreach is all about.”

40 Days for Life is kicking off its spring 2010 campaign with a live webcast tonight. The webcast begins at 7pm Eastern time and may be viewed online on UStream.

The webcast will originate from Jackson, Mississippi — one of the 165 communities in the United States, Canada, Australia and Northern Ireland participating in 40 Days for Life. The live event will feature Bereit, who helped organize the first 40 Days for Life campaign in 2004; Shawn Carney, the 40 Days for Life campaign director who was also part of that pioneering effort; and Abby Johnson, the former director of the Planned Parenthood center in Bryan, Texas who experienced a change of heart and left her job during the most recent 40 Days for Life campaign.

“Technology now exists that is permitting us to do something we have never been able to do before,” said Bereit. “We want to use tonight’s webcast to make sure that everyone can be a part of the excitement from the very start of this 40 Days for Life campaign — and hopefully to encourage communities who have not yet participated in the campaign to join us in the future.”

40 Days for Life consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, 40 days of constant, peaceful vigil outside abortion centers and Planned Parenthood offices and 40 days of active pro-life community outreach. The list of participating communities is posted online at: 40daysforlife.com.

The 40 Days for Life movement continues to grow. Thus far, five coordinated national 40 Days for Life campaigns have been conducted, twice each year, beginning in the fall of 2007. More than 300,000 people in some 280 cities have already taken part. Five abortion centers have closed following 40 Days for Life prayer vigils. Some 27 abortion industry employees have quit their jobs, including Johnson.

“And most incredibly,” Bereit said, “we are aware of 2,168 children — and their mothers — who were spared from the tragedy of abortion. And those are just the ones we know about.”

Susan B. Anthony List Recalls the Authentic Pro-Life Legacy of the Nation’s Leading Suffragette

America’s greatest women’s rights leader, Susan B. Anthony, was born 190 years ago today, on February 15th, 1820. The president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a national organization named for the pro-life suffragette, reflected on Anthony’s largely unknown pro-life legacy.

“If Susan B. Anthony was alive today, she would be overjoyed by the strength of the growing American pro- life majority,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. “While many are familiar with Anthony’s efforts to earn women the right to vote, few realize she vehemently opposed abortion. Anthony recognized that authentic women’s rights could never be built upon the broken rights of innocent unborn children.”

“Susan B. Anthony’s brand of original, authentic pro- life feminism resonates with today’s American woman,” said Dannenfelser. “And it’s why the old guard of abortion-promoting feminists struggles to remain relevant. In our increasingly pro-life culture, the ‘pro-choice’ label has worn out its usefulness. The modern feminist mantra calling for a taxpayer-funded abortion in every home flies in the face of Susan B. Anthony’s legacy of equal rights for all, even the unborn. ”

Susan B. Anthony’s pro-life stance is evident in her writings. The proprietor and business manager of the early feminist newspaper The Revolution, Anthony published many articles under a simple pseudonym, “A.” In an article entitled “Marriage & Maternity,” Anthony referred to abortion as “the horrible crime of child-murder,” and said that abortion would “burden [a woman's] conscience in life, [and] it will burden her soul in death.”

A poll conducted by the polling companyTM, inc./WomanTrend in October 2009 found that two thirds of women objected to government-funded abortions in a healthcare bill, including majorities of women of all ages, races, regions, marital and parental statuses, and political parties. Of these women, 55% self identified as Democrats, 66% as Independents, and 84% as Republicans. Even the 39% of women who identified as “pro-choice” opposed abortion funding. This data supports the Gallup poll from May 2009 that found a majority of Americans (51%) labeled themselves as “pro-life.” The Gallup poll also found that more women, 49% over 44%, call themselves “pro-life” over “pro-choice.”

Earlier this year, National Organization for Women President Terry O’Neill, confessed to the National Journal that the organization is struggling. “It seems to me we are stalled out…” The National Journal article contrasted the grassroots success of the Susan B. Anthony List with the apparent decline of NOW’s grassroots effectiveness.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of Americans, over 280,000 residing in all 50 states, dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.

For several weeks, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) has been sitting on the sidelines while its cohorts attacked CBS Television for agreeing to air a pro-family commercial during the Super Bowl. It seems the hierarchy of the abortion-committing group did not want to come off looking as ridiculous and petty as their counterparts. Just in time, two former pro-abortion leaders, Frances Kissling of “Catholics” for a Free Choice and Kate Michelman of NARAL Pro-Choice America, have come to the rescue of the rarely silent PPFA.

In an opinion piece published in The Washington Post, Kissling and Michelman chided their pro-abortion contemporaries for opening their mouths before thinking and failing to see a failed strategy when they were in the midst of the debate. The pair argued that “picking on Tim Tebow and his mom is not the way to go.” They said that instead of criticizing or trying to censor the ad, “the pro-choice movement needs its own Super Bowl strategy.”

“Pam Tebow was indeed courageous and had the legal right to choose,” Kissling and Michelman conceded. However, they argued that those who choose abortion are equally courageous, and this is the key point that should be made when talking about the ad. They offered up a specific suggestion: We’d go with a 30-second spot, too. The camera focuses on one woman after another, posed in the situations of daily life: rushing out the door in the morning for work, flipping through a magazine, washing dishes, teaching a class of sixth-graders, wheeling a baby stroller. Each woman looks calmly into the camera and describes her different and successful choice: having a baby and giving it up for adoption, having an abortion, having a baby and raising it lovingly. Each one being clear that making choices isn’t easy, but that life without tough choices doesn’t exist.

Pressure from fellow pro-abortion activists and the wise words of Kissling and Michelman led PPFA President Cecile Richards to release a statement, which was primarily used to attack Focus on the Family and draw attention away from the point of the commercial. Shortly thereafter, PPFA released two videos responding to the ad:

One video features former college and professional football player Sean James and Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner:

JAMES: I’m Sean James. I’m a former college and professional football player.

JOYNER: I’m Al Joyner. I won an Olympic gold medal in the triple jump.

JAMES: I love my family and I love sports.

JOYNER: And Super Bowl weekend is a perfect time to honor both–sports and family.

JAMES: There’s a lot of talk leading up to this Super Bowl about an ad focused on sports and family. The ad features a great football player, Tim Tebow, and his loving mother discussing a difficult medical decision she made for her family. I respect and honor Mrs. Tebow’s decision.

JOYNER: I want my daughter to live in a world where everyone’s decisions are respected.

JAMES: My mom showed me that women are strong and wise. She taught me that only women can make the best decisions about their health and their future.

JOYNER: My daughter will always be my little girl, but I’m proud every day as I watch her grow up to be her own person–a smart, confident young woman. I trust her to take care of herself.

JAMES: We are working toward the day where every woman will be valued; where every woman’s decision about her health and her family will be respected.

JOYNER: We celebrate families by supporting our mothers; by supporting our daughters; by trusting women.

In the other video, Richards does a great job utilizing the strategy suggested by Kissling and Michelman:

Super Bowl television ads get a lot of attention and this year one ad is getting the lion’s share. We hear that it will feature a football player, Tim Tebow, and his mom talking about a deeply personal medical decision she made years ago. She decided to continue her pregnancy, despite some serious risks. And people have been asking us at Planned Parenthood what we think about Pam Tebow’s decision and it’s simple. Planned Parenthood trusts every woman to make her own important personal medical decisions. Pam Tebow weighed medical and moral considerations and decided what was right for her and her family. And she did so in private and without government interference. That’s exactly what we want every woman to be able to do.

“The new tactics being employed by pro-abortion leaders is brilliant,” said Douglas R. Scott, Jr., president of Life Decisions International, a Planned Parenthood watchdog organization. “The James/Joyner video is slick. Like Tim Tebow, the men are articulate and come across as sincere, caring individuals.” Scott said the Richards video is also good, but “merely espouses the quintessential argument that has been used by abortion apologists for decades. It has just been softened a bit and repackaged.”

While Scott is impressed by the PPFA videos, he points out that the words spoken by the trio demonstrate just how unscrupulous the group can be. “This is nothing but nice-sounding rhetoric that evades the real issue. Moreover, the videos do not show the public the extreme nature of Planned Parenthood’s agenda.”

“James, Joyner and Richards do not want to talk directly about abortion. Every word that leaves their mouths presents a ‘let’s all get along and let everyone do whatever they want to do’ and ‘let’s celebrate and praise the decisions of those who choose to kill their children just as we might celebrate and praise those who choose to bring a new life into the world.’ As usual, the crux of the matter is ignored,” Scott said.

“This is not a question of trusting women; it is a matter of life and death. The bottom line is that if Pam Tebow had followed the advice of her doctors and those who support ‘reproductive choice’, Tim would have been killed. And this would have been a tragedy if he had grown up to become a janitor, a clerk, a teacher, a car salesman, a president, or even a football star. ‘Choices’ are not equal. Choosing death for another should never be ‘celebrated’, ‘praised’, or ‘respected’. While we should always give others the basic respect due anyone created in the image of God, we can never ‘respect’ the opinions or actions of those who support evil.”

Both PPFA videos may be viewed by clicking here for James/Joyner and here for Richards.

Tim Tebow–one of the most talented college quarterbacks of all time. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner is not shy about sharing his Christian faith. And some people find such openness quite offensive.

“Jewish celebrities often mention their religion in public,” said Douglas R. Scott, Jr., president of Life Decisions International (LDI). “But when someone dares to speak of his Christian faith, some seem to view it as a grave transgression.”

“‘Don’t shove your religion down my throat,’ people tell Christians. ‘Keep your religion to yourself.’ In other words, Christians are being intimidated and told to do exactly the opposite of what Jesus commanded them to do,” Scott said. “How exactly does one ‘shove’ a religion down a person’s throat? Is a shovel used for that? If Christians truly believe Scripture and love their fellow human beings, it would be cruel of them–and even sinful–to keep the life- and soul-saving truth from others.”

Openly declaring one’s Christian faith is bad enough, but it may be tolerated so long as it does not go too far. And what is an example of going “too far”? Christians who speak out against the killing of preborn human beings.

Enter some of the most radical “feminist” groups in the country. After hearing that Tebow and his mother will appear in a commercial that will air during Super Bowl XLIV, they demonstrated just how radical they really are–and they are very radical. Sponsored by the respected pro-family organization Focus on the Family, the ad presents a decidedly pro-life message.

In 1987, a pregnant Pam Tebow contracted an infection during a mission trip to the Philippines. Tebow’s doctor said the pregnancy placed her at risk and recommended that she abort the “mass of fetal tissue,” but she refused. “We didn’t believe that he was a ‘mass of fetal tissue’ because we had prayed for Timothy by name so we believed that we would just trust him to God.” In response, the football great said he is “really thankful” that his mother, whom he referred to as a “woman of courage,” did not choose to kill him before birth.

“The ad tells the story of one family and it is a message of hope, life and faith. And groups like the National Organization for Women (NOW), Feminist Majority, and the Women’s Media Center just cannot tolerate such a positive message,” Scott said. “If the story does not end in death, they condemn it.” The groups have started an online petition campaign (a common fund-raising gimmick) in an effort to convince CBS to pull the advertisement. “The groups want to impose a self-serving ‘gag rule’ by censoring the message.”

“This ad is hate masquerading as love,” said Erin Mattson, vice president of NOW. “By presenting only one option, um, for all women about when/how to have a family and not allow other viewpoints onto the air is really quite offensive.”

“The ad is ‘hate’?” Scott asked. “Sometimes one has just got to shake his head in disbelief at the depths of the ridiculous to which some extremists will sink to push their agenda. And why would both points of view be included in a paid advertisement? Will pro-abortion groups be doing so in their future ads? Will pro- abortion groups tell their celebrity supporters to be sure to mention both sides when they speak out?”

Scott said it is important to remember that the groups calling for censorship represent a fraction of the Feminist Movement. “Unfortunately, however, their outrageous extremism is casting a shadow over the entire cause.”

Life Decisions International (LDI) is dedicated to challenging the Culture of Death, concentrating on exposing and fighting the agenda of Planned Parenthood. LDI’s chief project is a boycott of corporations that fund the abortion-committing giant. To learn more about Planned Parenthood, please click here.

Following struggles documented by National Journal, NOW searches for a way to make itself relevant in an increasingly pro-life America.

Today Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser responded to the objections from the National Organization for Women (NOW) to Focus on the Family’s Super Bowl Pro-Life Tim Tebow advertisement. She offered the following statement:

NOW and company are losing their grip as their pro- abortion position sinks in public opinion. I had no idea NOW leaders were such experts on sports. Missed that part of their mission.

What is real here is their desperation to keep full information from women. Shouldn’t the “pro-choice” position respect Pam Tebow’s decision to choose Life? What is the worst case scenario in allowing the ad to air? Women are exposed to an example of sacrifice for the sake of an unborn child. NOW needs to explain where the harm and threat to women and children is here.

Today, the AP released a story detailing NOW’s efforts to call on CBS to drop the Tebow Super Bowl ad. The ad, produced by Focus on the Family, tells the story of Pam Tebow’s decision to continue with her pregnancy against doctor advice and give birth to the college football star, Tim Tebow.

Earlier this year, NOW President Terry O’Neill, confessed to the National Journal that the organization is struggling. “It seems to me we are stalled out…”.

The National Journal article, contrasted the grassroots success of the Susan B.

New survey shows 56% of all Americans and 58% of those 18-29 years old say abortion ‘morally wrong’

On the eve of the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion throughout the United States, a new survey shows a strong majority of Americans believe abortion to be “morally wrong.”

“Millennials” (those 18-29) consider abortion to be “morally wrong” even more (58%) than Baby Boomers (those 45-64) (51%). Generation X (those 30-44) are similar to Millennials (60% see abortion as “morally wrong”). More than 6 in 10 of the Greatest Generation (those 65+) feel the same.

The most recent Knights of Columbus — Marist survey — conducted in late December and early January — is the latest in a series of such surveys commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and conducted by Marist Institute for Public Opinion. In October of 2008 and July of 2009, the survey has been tracking an increasing trend toward the pro-life position — a trend confirmed by Gallup and Pew surveys in mid-2009. K of C — Marist surveys are available online at www.kofc.org/moralcompass.

“Americans of all ages — and younger people in even greater numbers than their parents — see abortion as something morally wrong,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “America has turned a corner and is embracing life — and in doing so is embracing a future they — and all of us — can be proud of.”

He added: “Advances in technology show clearly — and ever more clearly — that an unborn child is completely a human being. That, coupled with the large number of Americans who know one of the many people who has been negatively affected by abortion are certainly two of the reasons that Americans are increasingly uncomfortable with Roe v. Wade’s legacy of abortion, and with abortion generally. The majority of Americans now understand that abortion has consequences, and that those consequences are not good.”

The question on abortion was part of a larger survey, which will be released in the next several days.

This report presents the findings from a survey of 2,243 Americans — including an oversample of 1,006 Millennials. Reports for Americans have a margin of error of +/-2% and for Millennials it is +/-3%. Data were collected from December 23, 2009 through January 4, 2010 using an online, probability-based panel from Knowledge Networks, Inc. Additional information is available at www.kofc.org. Data on the polls commissioned by the Knights of Columbus are available at www.kofc.org/moralcompass.
